CIRCE

When I open my eyes, it is still dark with just the tiniest bit of light starting to creep through the glass window. I can tell that it is nearly morning, and just before the time that the caravan door usually gets unlocked and the breakfast trays get delivered. That’s when I realize that Bradley is still here lying beside me. I also realize that I was so swept up with him last night that I never went to try and talk with the other shifters to make a plan to escape.

I nudge him gently awake.

“Hey, I think it’s time to get up,” I whisper.

I can see his eyes open in the dark.

“Is it morning?” he asks groggily.

“Almost, and I’m worried about you getting caught here inside my caravan,” I say. “I’m also worried about what will happen to me and the other shifters if we don’t get out of here soon.”

Bradley sits up and reaches for his shirt.

“Yeah, I’m worried about that too. We need to get you out of here.”

“Not without the others,” I insist.

“I heard some audience members talking last night before I left,” he says in a worried tone. “It sounded like the crowd is less and less entertained by the illusion of people transforming into bears to fight each other. I think the appeal is wearing thin. It sounds like they want to see more than just fighting now—it sounds like they want to see fighting to the death.”

I am horrified at the thought.

“Do you think Tanner will agree to that?” I ask, already fearful that he will.

“I think that the people who come to see the night show are horrible humans, and that they come to the show willing to pay big money to see what they want. Tanner doesn’t care whether people live or die. All he cares about is control and money.”

“Agreed,” I say. “I can see the thirst for power in his eyes every time I look at him. I can also see that he thinks of shifters as disposable.”

“It doesn’t make sense though,” Bradley says as he stands up to put on his pants. “If the shifters are making him the money, then why would he be willing to risk their lives? He won’t have anyone left to fight in the night show if he lets all the shifters fight to the death and kill each other off.”

“I tried to escape once before, and I probably could have made it if I hadn’t turned around,” I say.

“What? Why in the world did you turn around?”

“Because he was going to kill the other shifters if I didn’t,” I answer. “That’s what makes me think that the loss of shifters doesn’t bother him. He can just lure more shifters into the freakshow to replace us. There must be more shifters living inside the city that I don’t know about, or even that the clan doesn’t know about.”

“Then Tanner won’t blink an eye at making them fight to the death,” Bradley says in dismay.
